bdnews24.com :UK-based ‘International Business Times’, that published the statement attributed to US Congressmen on Bangladesh’s political situation , says a senior aide to Tarique Rahman has sent them the pressnote. The fake statement condemned government’s action against BNP chief Khaleda Zia after she was prevented from observing “black day” on Jan 5 — a day the government observed as the first anniversary of the 10th parliamentary elections. Two US Congressmen later denounced the statement as “fraudulent” and pulled up a section of Bangladesh media for carrying it.US House of Representatives’ Committee on Foreign Affairs Chairman Ed Royce and Ranking Member Eliot Engel said they did not issue any such statement. They also said that, it was “unacceptable that any party would seek to use a fraudulent press statement from the U.S. Congress to advance their political goals”.The IB Times updated the story later and said when they contacted Tarique Rahman’s aide Humaiun Kabir, he said they had started an investigation, which is ongoing, after the House Foreign Affairs Committee released its statement.Kabir told IB Times that the episode was “embarrassing” but did not comment further on the matter, citing the ongoing investigation.
