BNP senior vice-chairman Tarique Rahman has accused Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina of trying to depict Bangladesh as a militant country in a motivated bid to perpetuate her power in the name of eliminating the so-called militancy.
“Whenever Hasina comes to power, she tries to portray Bangladesh as a militant state. She has done it at the UN summit this time as well. The religion-loving people of Bangladesh don’t support militancy,” he told a discussion in London on Monday.
The UK chapter BNP arranged the discussion on late president and BNP founder Ziaur Rahman at York Hall in East London, according to a message received here on Tuesday.
Tarique said people irrespective of their religion,
party opinion and colour must wage a strong mass movement against Hasina to make the country free from militancy.
He claimed that militancy emerged in Bangladesh during the rule of Awami League while BNP contained it.
The BNP leader termed Awami League an ‘evil force’ in Bangladesh politics and said thieves, killers, rogues, terrorists, bank looters and corrupts are favourites of Hasina. “The more a person can badmouth the more favourite he or she is to her.”
Tarique said, the country, its independence, sovereignty, democracy and religious and social values are no longer safe in Hasina’s hands.
He alleged that the current ‘illegal’ regime is trying to control the country’s people by issuing threats, making attacks and filing cases against them.
Mentioning that Awami League never understood the pulse of people, he said both Sheikh Mujib and Sheikh Hasina never had the trust in public support.
The BNP leader said Awami league had to go to court for having Mujib’ s contributions recognized but Zia’s role was acclaimed both at home and abroad. “No court verdict is required to have the acknowledgment for Ziaur Rahman’s works and contributions.”
He alleged that the ruling party had tried to stop authorities in Chicago, USA from naming a road there after Ziaur Rahman, but failed.
