The Times Of India, CHENNAI :
Tamil Nadu chief minister J Jayalalithaa on Friday announced that an award named after late President Dr APJ Abdul Kalam would be given away to an individual in recognition of his or her contribution in scientific development, humanities and students’ welfare.
In a statement, the chief minister said her government was taking several initiatives on the basis of the principle “Vibrant India; Prosperous Tamil Nadu.” “To strengthen this, I have ordered to institute an award in memory of Dr APJ Abdul Kalam. The award will be given away every year during Independence Day. It will carry a cash prize of Rs 5 lakh, a gold medal weighing eight gram and a certificate,” the chief minister said, adding that it would be given from this year onwards.
Jayalalithaa said the government would celebrate Ilaignar Ezhuchi
Naal (Youth Awakening Day) on his birth anniversary-on October 15 — every year. “Kalam wished to remain a teacher. Not only did he admire the students through his speeches, but led them to the pinnacle of success in life, besides contribution to the country’s growth,” she said.
Citing her health condition, Jayalalithaa did not attend Kalam’s funeral in Rameswaram on Thursday. Instead, she deputed seven of her cabinet colleagues.
