Taking law in own hand is an ominous sign

MOBS beat to death five people, including two women, and injured 10 others on suspicion of being child kidnappers across the country on Saturday. The incidents happened just a day after three people were beaten by a mob in Thakurgaon. Incidents of mob beating have increased even after the Bridges Authorities issued a warning against the spreading of rumours about the Padma Bridge authorities’ need to sacrifice people at the construction site. We see the sense of insecurity among marginalised people has evaporated trust on law enforcers drastically resulting in beating innocent people to death.
In the capital’s Badda, a single mother of two was beaten death when she went to Uttar Badda Government Primary School to ask about the admission process. Another woman aged around 32 died at Dhaka Medical College Hospital hours after she was beaten up by locals in Savar. In Keraniganj, an unidentified young man was killed and another critically injured in mob beating on Saturday morning as local thought the two youths to be child kidnappers. In Moulvibazar, an unidentified man of 50 was beaten death by a mob at a tea estate. In Narayanganj, a 25-year-old youth was killed by a mob in Siddhirganj on suspicion of attempting to kidnap a 6-year-old girl. In Lalmonirhat, three policemen were injured while trying to save a mentally challenged woman from a mob. In Savar, a middle-aged man was injured in mob beating when he was visiting a piece of land he owns in the area. In Chattogram’s Sitakunda, a 45-year-old mentally challenged woman was beaten by a mob. In Mymensingh, another mentally challenged woman was severely beaten by a mob in Bhaluka Upazila Saturday morning. In Pabna, a 32-year-old man was beaten in Bonogram Dighipara area of Chatmohar.
The Police Headquarters on Saturday said legal actions would be taken against anyone involved in spreading the rumours or mob beatings. We think, the fear of people over the child kidnappers is not irrelevant when incidents of raping and kidnapping of children are very common in the recent days. People started disbelieving the authorities and taking law in their own hands – it is dangerous.
