Staff Reporter :
The High Court (HC) on Thursday directed the jail authorities and other respondents to produce Barrister Mainul Hosein before a medical board at Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujib Medical University (BSMMU) for his health check-up.
The court also asked the jail authorities to submit the medical report in the HC by December 6, said Advocate Khandker Mahbub Hossain, a lawyer for the defendant.
The High Court Bench of Justice Syed Refaat Ahmed and Justice Md Iqbal Kabir passed the order after hearing a writ petition filed by Mainul’s wife, Saju Hosein, seeking an order upon the jail authorities to examine his health.
In the petition, Saju Hosein said that the health condition of Mainul Hosein has been deteriorating as he was not given proper treatment in jail, her lawyer Advocate Masud Rana told The New Nation.
Advocate Khandker Mahbub Hossain took part in the hearing on behalf of Saju Hosein. After the court order, he said, “The HC directed the jail authorities and other respondents to produce Barrister Mainul Hosein before a medical board at Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujib Medical University (BSMMU) for his health check-up.”
Saju Hosein filed two writ petitions on November 7 with the High Court.
In one petition, she sought order to admit Barrister Mainul to a specialised hospital in Dhaka, saying he has been suffering from heart, diabetes, kidney ailments and some other diseases.
In another separate petition, Saju Hosein challenged the government’s failure and inaction to prevent the recent attack on Barrister Mainul at Rangpur court compound.
A team of Detective Branch (DB) of Police on October 22 arrested former Adviser to the Caretaker Government Barrister Mainul Hosein from Dhaka in a defamation case filed in Rangpur Court. But some other cases were filed against him before and after his arrest.
A Rangpur Court on November 4 rejected a bail petition filed by Barrister Mainul Hosein in a defamation case. But he was attacked in the courtyard by some rowdy elements when he was being taken to the court on the day.
A Dhaka court yesterday rejected a bail petition filed by Barrister Mainul Hosein in a case filed under Digital Security Act on charge of same offence.
