T-Aman paddy harvest nears completion in Gaibandha

Harvest of transplanted (T) Aman paddy, a high yielding crop, is nearing completion in all the seven upazilas of the district this season.
Department of Agriculture Extension (DAE) officials said they set a target to bring 1, 19,649 hectares of land under T-Aman cultivation this year with the production target of 3,14,712 tonnes of rice.
But farmers finally cultivated on 1,25,630 hectares of land, exceeding the fixed target, bringing more 5981 hectares of land under farming due to favourable climate condition with achieving additional production of 39,272 tonnes of rice.Of them, some 19,180 hectares of land were brought under T-Aman farming in Sadar upazila, 15,230 in Sadullapur upazila, 13,570 in Palashbari upazila, 30,350 in Gobindaganj upazila, 27,450 in Sundarganj upazila, 14,150 in Shaghata upazila and 5400 in Fulchhari upazila, they said.
Now, the growers are harvesting the crop amid much enthusiasm and are getting desired production.
M. Lal Miah, a farmer of Barobaldia under Malibari union of Sadar upazila, said farmers are very happy as they are getting desired output this year.
To make the cultivation programme a grand success, Bangladesh Agricultural Development Corporation timely distributed high quality Aman seed to the farmers of the district at fair prices.
Besides, different state run commercial banks including Rajshahi Krishi Unnayan Bank disbursed agri loans on easy terms to the poor and marginal farmers to help them cultivate T-Aman paddy successfully on their land this season, sources said.
District training officer of DAE Showkat Osman said favorable climate condition, proper distribution of high quality seed by BADC and supply of fertilizers and other agri inputs on time to the growers are the reasons for getting desired production of the crop.
Apart from this, DAE also provided training programmes to the farmers for adopting modern technologies of paddy cultivation, crop management and preservation of quality seed, he also said.
Talking to the BSS, director of DAE AKM Ruhul Amin said about 95 percent harvest of the paddy had already been completed till December 13.
