Staff Reporter :
A powerful syndicate comprising the local influential quarter has allegedly taken possession of Moulvibazar kitchen market taking advantage of a lax monitoring by the authorities concerned.
Even, the syndicate is leasing out shops and possession of the market illegally to businessmen forming a nexus with a section of Dhaka district administration officials.
The government acquired 53 decimal of lands 30 years back to set up the market. The Dhaka South City Corporation (DSCC) was supposed to run the market under its ownership.
At that time it also decided to pay Tk 1.1 crore to the land owners who fell victim to the acquisition.
The DSCC has alreday paid Tk 78.50 lakh to the landowners. It could not paid the rest Tk 23 lakh after failing to locate land owners.
The Dhaka district adminstration is yet to handover the ownership of the market to the DSCC causing anomalies in leasing out shops and possession of the market, officials said.
They said the city corporation has alreday sent eight reminder letters to the Deputy Comissioner (DC) of Dhaka to handover the market and the last one was sent two months back.
“The City Corporation is the rightful owner of the market as it had alreday extended compensation to the land owners. We have sent several letters to the Dhaka district adminiastartion to hanover the market. But they are yet to do so for reasons unkhown,” Md Kamrul Islam Siddiqui, Chief Estate Officer of DSCC, told The New Nation yesterday.
“The DSCC will take possession of the market soon. We will drive out the syndicate who illegally leased out shops and possession of the market. Our mayor is also aware of the situation,” he added.
The DC of Dhaka could not be reached for comment.
At least 300 makeshift shops have been set up at Moulvibazar kitchen market that stands at the heart old Dhaka.
