Sylhet Correspondent :
The government on Sunday last lunched open market sale (OMS) of rice at Tk 30 per kilogram across Sylhet city and district.
Price of rice has become unstable due to heavy rainfall, full damage of Boro paddy crops in haor areas and syndication of market.
In the last 10 days, the price of rice has increased due to lack of proper monitoring of mill owners and wholesaler syndicate.
According to buyers and traders, the prices of rice including Pyjam, Lota, Swarna, Boro, Minicate, BR- 28, and BR- 29 have increased by Tk 10 to 12 per kg.
Now Minicate, Pyjam, Nazirshail, Kataribhog and Bashmati rice are being sold from Tk 52 to 80 per kg.
President of Consumers’ Association of Bangladesh (CAB), Sylhet district unit, Jamil Chawdhury said that the rice millers have been making huge profits but the farmers and consumers are being deprived.
Former President of TIB-SANAK Sylhet unit said, the government should monitor the rice markets properly as the millers have been increasing the price or rice irrationally.
Though the rice price has skyrocketed but the millers have been purchasing rice from the farmers at lower rate than the fair price.
The millers and wholesalers are making super profit by selling the rice which they stocked earlier.
