In order to preserve wild life, an initiative was taken to build a preservation center in Tilagor eco-park six years ago and it was taken as 3-year project but ended even in one year.
Construction work was finished two year ago, but due to shortage of manpower, the preservation center commonly known as zoo has not yet started its functioning. For the zoo many animals have been procured. Sylhet city dwellers said it should start functioning soon as a place for amusement and recreation. Concerned people said the center will start its functioning immediately. To meet crisis tender is to be called and the zoo will be leased out.
According to Sylhet Forest Department on 3rd October 2012, an inter-ministerial meeting of Livestock and Fishery, a decision was taken to establish the 3rd greatest government zoo. The site was selected at eco-park of Tilagor in Sylhet. The total cost is Tk 10 crore for three years. The area of the zoo is 112 acres. Out of Tk10 crore only 6 crore have been spent. As time expired, the remaining fund has been surrendered to Finance Ministry. First phase Tk 80 lakh was spent to purchase wild animals. These animals are now in Gazipur Bangabandhu Safari Park. When this center will be inaugurated these beasts will be transferred to Sylhet zoo. At that time various types of animals will be purchased from other zoo. Sylhet Forest Department informed, they wanted 27 workers to start it. For stall shortage the zoo is yet to start.
