The people here are facing untold suffering as most of the roads have turned into death traps for lack of proper maintenance and repair for long. The present situation of the roads in Sylhet district and city area suburbs shows that there is no authority to look after the roads.
Of the roads, Sylhet-Sultanpur-Balaganj, Sylhet-moglabazar-daudpur chowdhury bazar, Sylhet-jakiganj road, Sylhet-Companiganj road, Sylhet-Chatak road and Kadamtoli-Gotatikar road are in deplorable condition. Besides, Sultanpur-Azizpur road, Dowamir-Azizpur road have turned totally unfit for vehicular movement.
Other than the roads outside the Sylhet city mentioned above, most of those inside the city have also turned unfit for vehicular movement.
Numerous potholes have been created on the roads. As a result, situation turns complex following any scanty rainfall while commuters face untold sufferings at those times.
The city authority, Zila Parishad and roads and highways division seem to have no responsibility to carry out any visible step to make the roads usable for vehicular movement.
Meanwhile, people living inside and outside the District urged the concerned authority to take pragmatic steps in this connection.
The tarred Station road in Babna point which is very adjacent to the Sylhet South Surma Area has turned virtually into a muddy strip with a lot of potholes and a thick layer of mud due to lack of maintenance and repair.
Specially, one kilometer of kin bridge – Station road are in dilapidated condition as asphalt eroded away in many parts during this rainy season. So now it is taking one hour to pass a road of one kilometer.
During a visit to the area at monday afternoon, this correspondence saw huge stagnation of water on the road. The road turns into virtual canal. Moreover, innumerable small to large potholes developed and asphalt eroded away in many parts. Stenches were coming from the garbage and stagnant water creating an unhygienic situation.
Class nine student of Nashiba Khatun High School Emrana said, I have to go school every day through this road. Rickshaw pullers do not want to pull their rickshaw on this road. Sometime they charged higher fare due the derelict situation of road.
‘It is very difficult to pull rickshaw on this dilapidated road’ a rickshaw puller, Md Atik told this reporter.
The road is in such situation for many time but the situation worse after the recent rain, he added.
When asked about the dilapidated condition of the road,
Anamul Habib chief executive officer of SCC said, The repair work of road and drain will carry out simultaneously. He hoped to start repair work of road as soon as possible.
