Sylhet people suffer from power shortage

The people of thirteen upazilas in Sylhet district are facing severe power shortage due to negligence of the authorities.
According to local sources, about 295,000 consumers deprived of the benefits of electricity as the power lines remain damaged maximum times of the year. At night, the Sylhet area became the state of fear as there is no electricity around the locality.
Sufferings of students, traders, housewives and common people know no bound as the total area remains dark during the whole night.
Patients in hospitals face a critical situation as the service cannot not be given them properly. The surgical machines remain inoperative. Frozen foods got rotten and housewives cannot run the kitchen as there is no water due to shortage of power supply.
Electricity run auto-rickshaws lie idle as it cannot be charged for want of power. The family members of the bike owners have to face hardship as there is no work for the bike-man.
Maximum computer centres remain inoperative for the lack of power. Communication over cellphone already near to vulnerable situation as it cannot be charged. The students of Dakshin Surma Collage Arif alleged that they could not give concentration to their studies as they had to face load-shedding repeatedly. At day time we attend the classes in school in the intolerable situation. After returning home, it is impossible to read attentively as there is no light, said Ariful.
They have to face a tough situation, who are the examinees in schools and colleges in the district, he added. Trades, business, education and works of normal life have become deadlock due to power shortage.
Students and traders demanded the immediate solution of power supply. If the authorities fail to supply electricity timely, they threaten to go to hard line.
Requesting anonymity, an official of the board, said power supply in the district had remained in sorry state due to negligence of the authorities.
Juber Rahman Deputy Divisional engineer of Power Development Board Sylhet said the transformer of Kumar gawn had remained in-operative for two days causing immense suffering of the people after it got damaged by recent storm.
A major programme for improving the existing troubled power distribution system for Sylhet division has been prepared.The 18670 mn project styled ‘Power Distribution system development project for Sylhet division’ has already been approved by the Planning Commission.He added .
It would help revamp the existing electricity supply system in the region, which had been in a pitiable state for long even after producing 3 fold of region’s power demand on the power stations in greater Sylhet region. the Chief engineer of the PDB,
 Sylhet zone Ratan Kumar Sarker informed 12 new sub-stations would be constructed while 5 others would be renovated and strengthened. Besides, 135 km long 33KV line, 606 km long 11 KV line, 596 km long 11/4 KV line and 496 km Low tension line would be set up in the division. These would also help extension and strengthening of the existing system of power distribution lines in all the 4 districts of the division.
Under the project, 3000 new transformers would also be procured and set up on the distribution lines, the senior official added, it will reduce the line tripping incidents due to over loading.He Added.
