The authorities on Tuesday morning declared the Nursing Institute at Osmani Medical College Hospital here closed for an indefinite period following campus violence.
The decision was taken at a meeting by the authorities as nurses at the medical college hospital continued their indefinite work abstention protesting the alleged assault on one of their colleagues by some intern doctors. Confirming the decision, Tanmoy Bhattacharya, assistant director of the hospital, said the nursing institute has been closed for an indefinite period considering the situation on the campus and all resident students have been asked to vacate their dormitories by 6 pm on Tuesday.
Hearing the news of the closure, the agitating nursing students staged a demonstration in front of the institute in their instant protest against the decision of the authorities. They declared to continue the work abstention programme until their demands are met.
Campus sources said, two intern doctors-Tofail Ahmed and Jonny- locked in an altercation with Proloy, a male nurse, over bringing the prescriptions of the patients from ward no. 5 at the hospital around 12:30 am on Monday.
At one stage, Tofail, Jonny and some other interns beat up Proloy, leaving him injured. Four other nurses were also injured when they tried to save Proloy.
On information, the hospital authorities rescued Proloy and admitted him to the hospital.
Angered by the incident, the nurses went on work abstention and staged demonstration demanding exemplary punishment to those involved in the attack.
