JCD man killing: Sylhet Medical closed: Students enforced strike

The Academic Council of Sylhet MAG Osmani Medical College on Thursday declared the college closed until June 12 following unrest on the campus over the death of an activist of Jatiyatabadi Chhatra Dal.Principal Prof Dr Morshed Ahmed Chowdhury said the Academic Council has decided to keep the college closed until Thursday.
A 5-member probe body headed by Surgery Department head Prof Dr AKM Mosharref Hossain has been formed to investigate the incident, he said.
JCD activist Towhidul Islam, a 4th year MBBS student of the medical college and an inmate of Abu Sina Hall, sustained injuries in an attack allegedly by activists of Bangladesh Chhatra League (BCL) in his college dormitory room on Wednesday evening.
He was rushed in a critical condition to Osmani Medical College Hospital where doctors declared him dead around 8:35 pm.
Sylhet Metropolitan Police ADC and media wing chief Md Rahmatullah said Anwar Hossain, uncle of Towhidul, filed a murder case with Kotwali police station mentioning names of 10 Bangladesh Chhatra League men and 8/10 unidentified people.
Meanwhile city unit of BNP announced a half-day hartal here for Sunday protesting the killing.
Sylhet MAG Osmani Medical College unit Jatiyatabadi Chhatra Dal (JCD) already enforced strike on the campus yesterday.
The striking students took position at important points on the campus since the morning and staged demonstration chanting slogans in support of their demands.
No classes and examinations were held.
The students yesterday threatened that they would continue their strike until the demands are met.
