Farmers in Sylhet Division are busy with their crop fields for the Transplanted Aman (T-Aman) paddy farming in a big way this time in a bid to recoup the massive losses they had suffered during the last Boro season due to the repeated crop damage by floods.
Meanwhile, in a bid to help some affected farmers of Sunamganj, the government provided 227 farmers with seedlings for one bigha land each this season. However, there had been no assistance for any other district in the division.
The region was badly hit by the disasterous calamity, caused by excess rains and rolling down of waters from the upstream during the Boro harvest season, which is considered the lone cash crop of the vast low-lying tracts of Sunamagnj, Habiganj, Moulvibazar and Sylhet districts.
DAE Sylhet divisional office sources said it was almost unusual, adding the loss of Boro crops was worth at least Tk 98.6 million in the region. However, the crop loss was much higher, farmers claimed while demanding incentive programme in this year’s Boro season.
