Most of the valuable instruments worth over Tk 120 million has been lying unused for years due to absence of permanent teachers since the inception of the government-run Sylhet Engineering College in 2007.
There are some hired and part time teachers from institutions like the Shahjalal University of Science & technology (Sust), MC College, Sylhet Polytechnic Institute etc.
There is a library, well-equipped laboratory, administrative building, principal quarter, teachers and staff quarters etc on 8 acre area at the city suburb’s Baluchar, having a scenic beauty with hillocks and greens around. But, it doesn’t have its own teacher or principal as yet.
Sylhet Polytechnic Institute Vice-principal, Md. Shaokat Hossain, who is serving the college as principal as additional charge told this correspondent Tuesday, “Although 3 departments were approved, we had only one department at the beginning. The Civil Engineering Department was introduced last year and hopefully the Electrical & Electrical Engineering (EEE) would be staretd this year.”
The youngsters, who had dreamt to have quality education are almost disappointed as they found no permanent teachers. They staged agitation programme like human chain, rallies, handing over memo to the high officials, including the finance minister and education minister during the last 7 years, but all went in vain.
Establishment of the institution began in 2005 and compleled by 2007 at a cost of Tk 510 million at the city suburban area.
The college started its journey in 2007-2008 targeting 3 departments, Computer Science & Engineering, Civil Engineering and Chemical Engineering.
But, only 60 students in Computer Science & Engineering were admitted in 2007-2008. Batches of 60 each in 2008-2009, in 2009-2010 and 2011-2012 were also admitted. However, it was suspended in 2010-2011 due to the teachers’ crisis. Presently, 300 including 50 female are studying in the institution.
Already 3 batches had passed out successfully and they are placed on good jobs at different institutions, said the Registrar Selim Ahmed.
