Dhaka Metropolitan Police Commissioner Md Asaduzzaman Miah has said that members of Special Weapons and Tactics (SWAT) will gear their activities to root out terrorism and militancy from the country.
“Out of 70 SWAT members, 50 have been trained in the United States while 20 new members [who have been recently recruited] will also be trained there like the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) of the US. The number of the team members will be raised to 100 soon.”
The DMP Commissioner said this while addressing a certificates presentation programme in the city’s Mirpur-14 area on Saturday.
“We must ensure security and safety of the city residents. We will take all sorts of security measures in this regard to pluck out militancy and terrorism quickly,” the police official said.
Responding to a question about giving permission to BNP for holding rally at Suhrawardy Udyan the DMP Commissioner said that no political party would be allowed to hold any
rally there in the public interest. “Besides, the decision was taken to avoid any untoward incident as the other political parties also sought permission for holding rally at the same venue the same day,” the DMP Commissioner said.
DMP (Action room)’s Deputy Commissioner Proloy Kumar Zoarder and Additional Commissioner Monirul Islam, also chief of the Counter Terrorism and Transnational Crime (CTTC) unit, were present at the programme.
Certificates were presented to 20 newly recruited members of the SWAT in the Public Order Management Division of DMP at Mirpur-14.
