UNB, Sylhet :
Amid a movement by a pro-Awami League teachers’ panel demanding removal of Vice Chancellor of Shahjalal University for Science and Technology (SUST) Prof Aminul Haque Bhuiyan, the VC is going on a two-month leave on May 1.
The university syndicate approved his leave application at a meeting on Thursday morning. Meanwhile, the teachers of pro-Awami League teachers’ panel continued their protest, holding a human chain programme in front of the VC’s building yesterday noon.
Sources at the university said a proposal will be sent to the President through the syndicate to give the charge of acting VC to treasurer Iliasuddin in absence of Aminul Islam.
Sources said this is the primary process of the VC’s resignation and he might not joint the office after leave, they said.
Earlier, on April 20, 35 teachers of Shahjalal University for Science and Technology (SUST), including renowned author Prof Dr Muhammed Zafar Iqbal, resigned from their administrative posts demanding resignation of their Vice Chancellor.
On April 13, an altercation broke out when 19 teachers from Physics and Geography and Environment departments of the university went to hold talks with the VC over space allocation between the two departments. Following the altercation, Prof Dr Syed Badiuzzaman Faruk of Physics and Prof Dr Sharif Mohammad Sharafuddin of Geography and Environment resigned as heads of the two departments. A deadlock was created on the campus following the resignation of the heads of two departments.
