UNB, Sylhet :
Authorities of Shahjalal University of Science and Technology (SUST) has withdrawn its declaration of a 10-day closure of academic activities at the university. The decision was taken at an emergency syndicate meeting, presided over by the university’s Vice Chancellor Dr Aminul Haque Bhuiyan, on Thursday morning. Earlier on Wednesday, the SUST authorities declared the university closed for 10 days following a clash between two groups of Bangladesh Chhatra League (BCL) on the campus on Tuesday night. Protesting the decision, around 500 students took position in front of the VC’s residence on Wednesday night. The VC talked to the protesters over the issue around 12am, but failed to convince the students to call off the demonstration. At one point, they locked the main gate of the VC’s residence.
The action prompted the VC to call an emergency syndicate meeting on that decided to withdraw the closure Thursday morning. Akhter Hossain, officer-in-charge of Jalalabad Police Station, said additional police forces has been deployed at the university to avoid any untoward situation.
