Suspended sub-inspector Akbar Hossain Bhuiyan who was accused of torturing a young man to death in Sylhet has reportedly fled to India.
He entered India through Companyganj border with the help of a human trafficker, said the Police Bureau of Investigation (PBI), the investigating agency of the incident.
Along with Akbar, local journalist Abdullah Al Noman, who helped destroy the evidence of the torture, also fled to India with the help of Helal Ahmed, a local human trafficker.
Farid Uddin, superintendent of police of Sylhet, said they are certain that Akbar with the help of Noman crossed the border in the early hours of October 14.
He also said they arrested Helal on October 22 for helping them flee the country. However, he did not confess to his crime on remand.
Raihan was tortured to death at Bandarbazar Police Outpost in Sylhet city on October 11.
His wife filed the case in this regard.
Five policemen, including Akbar, were suspended and three others withdrawn over the incident.
However, Akbar fled on October 13 and he still remained traceless.
