DU Correspondent :Rapid Action Battalian (RAB) on Sunday arrested Shafiur Rahman Farabi, the suspect in the murder of blogger Avijit, on Monday morning.Addressing a press briefing, Commander Mufti Mahmud Khan, Director of Legal and Media Wing of RAB, said that they had arrested Farabi on the basis of a secret information from Dhaka’s Jatrabari bus stand area when he was about to leave the city. He had been handed over to DB police.The RAB Director said, Farabi is a self-proclaimed ‘Islamist blogger’ who had admitted of making online postings several times, threatening to kill Avijit. He (Farabi) also posted provocative statuses on his own facebook page called ‘Farabi Blog’ the RAB Director added.The arrest was made four days after unidentified assailants killed Avijit, 42, and badly hurt his wife Rafida Ahmed Bonya near the TSC on the Dhaka University campus on last Thursday night.Talking to media, Mufti Mahmud Khan said that from primary investigation they had got some vital information about Farabi, which would not be disclosed to the media right now. The real motive would be known from further interrogation. Earlier, on the day Ajit Roy, a former Dhaka University Professor after killing of his son Avijit Roy, filed a murder case with the Shahbag thana against unknown assailants.The RAB official claimed that Ajoy Roy, alleged that Farabi had threatened to kill his son several times. Farabi, a former student of Chittagong University (CU), could not complete his fourth years graduation course. According to his last facebook account, he said, “It is a holy duty of the Muslims to kill Avijit. He cannot be killed now as he lives in the USA’.It may be mentioned that earlier Farabi came into the limelight for threatening to kill the Imam who would lead the Namaaj-e-Janaza (Funeral prayer) of blogger Ahmed Rajib Haider an activist of Gonojagoron Mancha.He was arrested on February 24 last year under the ICT Act for the threat, but released on bail on Aug 21 the same year.
