Suspected gun trader killed in police ‘shootout’

A suspected gun trader was killed in a police ‘shootout’ at Putkhali frontier under Benapole port police station early Thursday.
The killed was identified as Ilias Mridha Shohagh, 32, son of Abdul Latif Mridha of Kachranda area under Rajbari Sadar upazila.
Apurba Hasan, officer in-charge, Benapole port police station told New Nation that arms trader Shohagh died in ‘gunfight’ between a gang of miscreants and the police as the police challenged some motorbike riders at Putkhali frontier under Benapole port police station at around 2am on Thursday.
The police, earlier, arrested Ilias Mridha from Battala area of Gazipur village under Benapole port police station at around 5:30 pm on November 3. The police recovered a 7.65 pistol, one round of bullet and two magazines from his possessions, said Apurba Hasan.
The OC also said the miscreant fled from the police custody while he was being brought to a Jessore court on Wednesday afternoon as the police van met an incident at Kagojpukur area under the port police station.
The Ilias Mridha was declared dead by the attending doctor at Jessore Medical College Hospital early Thursday after he had been brought there with critical bullet wounds after the ‘gunfight’, the OC further said.
Three policemen including sub inspector Monir were also wounded during the ‘gun battle’, claimed the police.
