UNB, Dhaka :
Senior Awami League leader Suranjit Sengupta has called for reforming the Rapid Action Battalion (RAB), but
dismissed BNP’s demand that the elite anti-crime force be disbanded.
Suranjit’s remarks came amid allegation that three RAB officials played a role in the abductions-killings of seven people in Narayangan, including Nazrul Islam, a councilor of the city corporation and local lawyer Chandan Sarker.
“I think it’s urgent to reform RAB to make it accountable. Any organization can be dreadful
without accountability,” he said on Monday. He was addressing a discussion organised by Bangabandhu Academy at the Institution of Diploma Engineers in the city.
He rejected BNP Chairperson Khaleda Zia’s demand to disband Rab. “It is either her wrong idea that problem will be solved by disbanding it or her remarks came out of vengeance,” he said.
Suranjit welcomed the recent High Court directive to arrest the accused RAB officials. She said the order either has to be carried out or to be stayed by the appellate division of the Supreme Court.
The Awami League leader said politics demands exposing the truth behind the seven murders in Narayanganj.
Awami League Publicity and Publication Secretary Dr Hasan Mamud, among others, addressed meeting.
It was presided over by Bangabandhu Academy adviser Haji Mohammad Selim.
