Cricketer Arafat Sunny’s mother Nargis Akhter secured bail on Thursday in a domestic violence case filed by a woman, who claims herself to be the cricketer.
On Thursday, the spinner Sunny’s mother Nargis Akhter surrendered to a Dhaka court in a case filed under the Women and Children Repression Prevention Act and pleaded for bail.
“The court granted bail on a bond of Tk 5,000 until the police files its report, in the case” defence counsel M Jewel Ahmed told the newsmen.
On Feb 1, the woman who claims to be Sunny’s wife filed the case over alleged domestic violence against Sunny and his mother with the Dhaka’s Women and Children Repression Prevention Tribunal. The court took the case in its cognisance and ordered the police to investigate into the matter.
Police arrested Sunny on Jan 22 after the 21-year-old woman filed the case under the ICT Act on Jan 5 at with Mohammadpur Police Station of the city. Sunny has been accused of placing offensive pictures containing pictures of the woman on social media. He was produced to the court the same day, where police were allowed a day to interrogate Sunny.
The woman claims she and Sunny met seven years ago. They became involved in a relationship and eventually got married in December 2014, without informing their parents. The families came to know of their marriage afterwards, but she claimed Sunny kept buying time before he took her with him. The family of the woman was growing restless and she asked Sunny to either take her, or arrange for the dissolution of the marriage.
In June last year, Sunny opened a fake account on Facebook and began posting some of their intimate photos through messenger while threatening her, according to the case details.
Following Sunny’s arrest, the woman filed another case accusing him of demanding dowry and a third one alleging domestic violence. The left-arm bowler, who had played for the national team, is now in jail as he failed to secure bail in the other cases, filed against him.
