Sunamganj flood-hit cattle rearers facing fodder crisis

Cattle head rearers of Sunamganj are yet to get assistance for fodder even weeks after the Prime Minister’s commitment during her visit to the severely flood affected region.
During her visit to the Shulla upazila headquarters on 30 April, the Prime minister announced special assistance for the farmers cattle food as they had already lost the cattle feed due to the several week-long calamity. Failing to arrange fodder in time, many farmers were compelled to sell out their cattleheads, the most important tool for tilling lands.
Sunamganj district Livestock Officer said, according to an estimate fodder and other cattle feed worth Tk 929 million were damaged by the severe floods that prolonged for weeks since the first week of April. Most of the poor and middle class farmers had to sell out their cattleheads at throw away prices.
The region’s farming would be hard hit due to the shortage of tilling cattle heads in the next cropping season, he opined. The total paddy crop in the district’s 91 unions was damaged this year. It also damaged fodder on 49,925 hectares of land totally which could be consumed by 479,000 cattleheads. The extent of paddy crop damage had been estimated to be worth about Tk 20 billion, the official added.
The damage reports had already been sent to the livestock head office and to the ministry, the official added. “We expect soon there would be a decision from the head office to help the farmers, the official said, however, on emergency basis 20 tonnes of cattle feeds had already been supplied to the poor and marginal farmers.”
Farmer Abul Hossain of Jamalganj upazila said, “We don’t know what we would do in the next cropping season as both my bullocks are sold out.”
Joint convener of Haor Banchao, Sunamganj Banchao Andolan Abu Sufian said the farmers in the district are waiting for assistance for their cattleheads as the PM had announced it at a public meeting.
