Mystery of killing youth Sumon has been found after arresting five accused from city’s Mohammadpur. Though not a target, Sumon Shikder, 25, a follower Shah Alam Jibon, was hacked to death by members of Russel and Emon group on the night of February 1 after the two city corporation elections.
Shah Alam Jibon, an associate of former DNCC Ward No 33 Commissioner Tariquzzaman Rajib was the target of attack as he had hostility with Russell and Emon group.
Locals said, victim Sumon was locally known as an active supporter of Jibon group.
According to police, five accused have been arrested in this connection. They are Russell, 21, Al Amin Khan, 22, Md. Imran 5, Md. Shakil, 20 and Md. Rajib, 23. They all were arrested from last Tuesday midnight to Wednesday morning. On preliminary interrogation, the arrested accused gave their confessional statement, ADC of Mohammadpur Zone Wahiduzzaman told the media.
He said that Shah Alam, an associate of former Commissioner Rajib had hostility with Russell and Emon group in local politics for long.
On the Dhaka city elections day, the members of Emon group came out to kill Shah Alam Jibon at a local club. But they did not get Shah Alam at the club.
Later in the evening, around 50 masked youths suddenly arrived at the club again and looked for supporters of ward 33 Juba League leader Shah Alam Jibon.
In absence of Jibon, they hacked Sumon, a follower of Jibon, indiscriminately and left the place leaving Sumon in a pool of blood.
Sumon’s friend Sajjad said that we immediately rushed Sumon to Suhrwardy Medical College Hospital where on-duty doctors declared him dead.
He said that he could identify none instantly as all of them were masked.
Earlier, a case was filed by the victim’s father Anowar Ahmed Sikder with the Mohammadpur Police Station accusing unnamed assailants on February 2 in connection with the murder.
Victim’s family members said that Sumon worked at Lalmatia Women’s College Polling Centre throughout the Election Day on Saturday as an activist of ruling Awami League mayoral candidate for Dhaka north city corporation Atiqul Islam and AL-backed ward 32 councillor candidate Syed Hasan Nur Islam.
