Sukomal Barua Gold Medal introduced at DU

A Gold Medal titled ‘Buddhist Scholar Prof. Dr. Sukomal Barua Gold Medal’ has been introduced at the Department of Pali and Buddhist Studies of Dhaka University (DU).
Prof Dr Sukomal Barua’s Daughter Sanghamitra Barua Manosi handed over a cheque for Taka four lakh to DU Treasurer Prof Md Kamal Uddin on Monday at the Vice-Chancellor’s office.
DU Vice-Chancellor Prof AAMS Arefin Siddique, Dean of the Faculty of Arts Prof Md Akhtaruzzaman and Acting Chairman of the Department of Pali and Buddhist Studies Prof Dilip Kumar Barua and acting Registrar Syed Rezaur Rahman were present on this occasion, among others.
Out of the income of this donation, every year one meritorious student who will secure the highest marks in Masters final examination from the Department of Pali and Buddhist Studies of DU will be awarded ‘Buddhist Scholar Prof. Dr. Sukomal Barua Gold Medal.’
Vice-Chancellor Prof Arefin Siddique thanked the donor and his family members for introducing this gold medal at Dhaka University and hoped that the students of the university would be highly benefited and encouraged from this donation.
Dr Sukomal Barua, Professor of the Department of Pali and Buddhist Studies
of DU, was born in Dhemsha Village under Satkaniya Upazilla of Chittagong
District in 1955.
He is the third son of late Dr. Ganash Chandra Barua and late Buddhimati
Barua. Prof. Barua was awarded ‘Ekushey Padak’ in 2006 for his outstanding
contribution to education and research.
