AP, Baghdad :
Iraqi officials confirmed that a suicide attack in northern Baghdad has killed at least 12 people.
A police officer said that the attacker set off his explosives-laden vest on Monday morning among commuters in Baghdad’s bustling Adan Square. He added that 25 others were wounded.
A medical official confirmed the casualty figures. Both officials spoke on condition of anonymity as they were not authorized to brief the media.
No one claimed responsibility for the attack in a mainly Shiite area of the city. But it bore the hallmarks of the Islamic State extremist group, which controls a third of Iraq and Syria and frequently launches attacks targeting Iraq’s majority Shia.
