‘Successful fish farming can ensure food, cloth and shelter’

Successful fish farming could be the effective means of ensuring food, cloth and shelter of the nation, speakers at a post-rally discussion said.
They viewed there is enormous scopes of boosting up fish production after the best uses of existing national resources. So, time has come to make the growers level fish farming hustle-free and more effective for the sake of meeting up the protein deficiency.
Department of Fisheries organized the discussion on Wednesday at Zila Shilpakala Academy auditorium marking the National Fisheries Week-2014 where more than 300 fish farmers, officials of the line departments and others concerned attended.
Fish farmer Rafiqul Islam, who took part in the discussion, called for finding out the existing problems in the sector and solving those as early as possible.
He said stern action should be taken against those who are manufacturing and marketing inferior quality fish meal. “Interests of the fish farmers should be protected on priority basis,” he added.
Another farmer Altab Hossain said random fish harvesting in the Padma River should be restricted in the greater interests of protecting the indigenous small fish species. He identically mentioned that some landlords and musclemen are involved in the malpractice and urged the local administration to take effective measures against those. There is no way but to protect the natural fisheries resources, he opined.
In his welcome speech, District Fisheries Officer Golam Rabbani said the present government has been implementing various programmes to uplift the sector. “We are committed to build formalin-free fish market”.
Commissioner of Rajshahi division Helaluddin Ahmed and Divisional Deputy Director of Department of Fisheries Mahbub Ul Alam addressed the discussion as chief and special guests respectively with Deputy Commissioner Mejbah Uddin Chowdhury in the chair.
