Staff Reporter :
The State Minister for Posts and Telecommunications Tarana Halim said that mobile phone subscribers would get call drop compensation if it happens more than once a day.
The minister said this to the reporters after a meeting with officials of all mobile phone operators and Bangladesh Telecommunication Regulatory Commission (BTRC) at the Secretariat on Sunday.
Tarana Halim said, ‘Subscribers will be compensated if call drop happens at least twice a day and the mobile operators inform the subscribers about their compensation through SMS.’ Compensation for call drop will be effective from July.
“Our main target is to solve network and call drop problems. Bangladesh Telecommunication Regulatory Commission (BTRC) will form a committee in this regard to examine the system with the help of mobile operators,” said Tarana.
In January, BTRC gave directives to all mobile phone operators to provide compensation for each call drop, she added.
In December last year, Tarana sat with all mobile operators to resolve the issues. She informed the journalists if the mobile operators cannot prevent call drop, the government will force them to introduce compensation system.
But operators said that call drop rate in Bangladesh is in tolerable level according to International Telecommunications Union (ITU).
The State Minister said “All unregistered SIM cards will remain cut for two months after May 31. During this time, no subscriber will be able to collect duplicate SIM or buy it again.” But non-resident Bangladeshis can register their SIM cards within 15 months. In that case, the NRB will have to show documents, she added.
