Several hundred residential students of Sayed Ameer Ali Hall at Rajshahi University yesterday staged demonstration inside the hall protesting the unhygienic and substandard food supplied in dining.
Talking to the New Nation, some agitators alleged that stale food, dusts and insects are often found in the dining hall, posing serious health risk.
Despite repeated complaints, the authorities didn’t pay heed to the problems, a number of them said.
Hall sources said, Students found inside the kitchen room of the dining that the ruined potatoes and other vegetables were being prepared for cooking yesterday noon.
Noticing the matter, over 200 students brought out protest procession inside the hall and joined together in front of the hall provost’s room to press home their demands.
On information, SM Mokhlesur Rahman, house tutor of the hall rushed to the spot and assured of the students to take proper steps.
“Tomorrow (today) we will sit together regarding the matter where stern action would be taken against the responsible men for supplying unhygienic food”, he said to the students.
Monirul Islam Naeem, a residential student of the hall said, they were being served with low quality food despite providing sufficient money.
“They often fall sick after taking foods at the dining hall”, he also said.
He alleged that hall dining staffs were serving those despite repeated complaints due to indifference of the authorities.
Liton Sarker, another resident student said, due to substandard food at hall dining we are forced to take meal outside the hall which is too costly for us. Even many of the students cook in the room that is also time consuming.
