The students of Jahangirnagar University continued their protests and brought out a procession on the campus on Thursday afternoon, defying the ban on any protest procession or rally on the campus.
More than a hundred teachers and students started the protest rally from in front of the old administrative building of the university under the banner “Jahangirnagar University against corruption” at 12pm Thursday.
The rally paraded streets and residential areas inside the university and stalled in front of the vice-chancellor’s residence for some time and dispersed reaching the old administrative building again.
They were chanting slogans against the VC. These were “Our campus, our right; save the campus, join the fight” and do not vacate halls.
Mahathir Mohammad, President of JU unit of Samajtantrik Chhatra Front (Marxist) said: “We are rejecting the authority’s decisions. We are of the view that, as the VC is holding her position illegally, all her orders are invalid. The authority issued notice of vacating the halls so that she can freely conduct her unlawful activities.”
Shovon Rahman, Organizing Secretary of JU unit of Samajtantrik Chhatra Front said: “We are urging Professor Farzana Islam to prove her innocence facing investigation. But she has no spine for that. Rather she provoked Chhatra League to attack us.”
Addressing the Vice-Chancellor, she said, “Leave your
chair, and let the university run smoothly. Otherwise you will have to bear responsibility for the stale state of the University.”
The protesters also called for a rebellious concert in front of the vice-chancellor’s residence on Thursday evening.
Previously at 8pm on Wednesday, the university authority issued a notice banning all kinds of meetings, protests, rallies and prohibited students from residing in the office or hall area.
The notice also mentioned that according to the syndicate meeting on November 5 all classes and examinations would be halted from November 6 until further notice.
Students have already left the hall premises. The shops inside the campus have also been shut down. The authority deems it unsafe for students to reside on campus at this moment.
ASM Firoz-Ul-Hasan, Acting Proctor of the university said, “The university has been closed sine die. Classes and exams have been suspended. The residential halls have been cleared out. If anyone tries to cause upheaval it will be against the law.”
He also warned, if the situation deteriorates strict action will be taken.
