Thousands of students and guardians are deeply worried as the MPO listed teachers of all the secondary schools and madrasas threatened to boycott Secondary School Certificate (SSC) and its equivalent examinations’ duty, if their demand is not met.
The teachers will observe two-day work abstention at all the educational institutions across the country from today (Saturday) for nationalisation of their institutions. The work abstention also hampers the normal academic activities.
The SSC and its equivalent examinations are set to start from February 1 all over the country.
Mitu Khandoker, a SSC examinee, told The New Nation on Friday that she was passing a very busy time to take preparation for the SSC examination. “I want to attain a good result in the SSC examination. But our teachers are on hunger strike in Dhaka and they say that they will boycott examinations’ duty. It makes me worried and it disturbs my preparation,” she said.
“Now we are in good mood for taking examinations. We will lose our stamina if the examinations delay for the teachers’ movement. And even we don’t know what will be happened,” Mitu from Bhola district said.
Sifat Hossain, a SSC examinee from a renowned school in Dhaka, said, “I know and see every day that the teachers in front of the Jatiya Press Club are observing hunger strike. Some teachers told us that they might boycott SSC examination if their

demand was not met. I don’t know what I will do. I cannot concentrate to my study now.”
Saiful Islam, a guardian, said, if the teachers continue their strike and boycotts the SSC examinations, the situation would be bad. It will be impossible for the government to take the examination as there would be no one for invigilation and assessment.
“We as guardians are in deep concern about our children’s future. They are already in frustrations after hearing the threat of the teachers exam boycott,” Saiful said.
Md Kamal Uddin, another guardian, said the government is yet to give any fruitful instruction to the agitating teachers. “Our children ask us about the examinations, but we cannot give them appropriate answer. It is not ethical movement of the teachers ahead of the SSC examinations. And the government’s role is also questionable in this regard. As a result, our children are in anxious,” he said.
Nazrul Islam Rony, Adviser of Besarkari Shikhkha Jatiyakaran Liaison Forum, and President of Bangladesh Shikkhok Somittee, told The New Nation on Friday evening that they would not go back home before meeting their demands of making their institutions nationalisation.
“We will observer two-day work abstention at all the secondary level educational institutions from Saturday. We will also try to meet the Prime Minister to place our demand,” he said.
“Our programmes, including hunger strike in front of the Jatiya Press Club and work abstention, will continue. We will wait till January 29. If the government fails to meet our demands before January 28 we would take decision to boycott SSC examinations’ duty,” Nazrul Islam said.
Jasim Uddin, joint convener of the forum, said they sat with the officials of the education ministry several times and placed their demand to Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina through the secretary of Secondary and Higher Education Division in vain.
“That is why we have started the hunger strike. We will not return home until our demand is met,” he said.
“We cannot rely on the education minister. We want an announcement from the Prime Minister,” he said.
Hundreds of teachers have been observing their hunger strike in front of the Jatiya Press Club for nationalisation under the banner of “Besarkari Shikhkha Jatiyakaran Liaison Forum”, a platform of six organisations of teachers and employees since January 15.
A total of 177 teachers fell sick and 30 of them were given intravenous saline drips.
There are some five lakh teachers and employees of 37,000 MPO-listed academic institutions in the country. About 25 lakh students are likely to take part in this year’s examinations.
