Students for early opening of university dormitories

The students of Islamic University staged demonstrations for the 3rd consecutive days on Tuesday and gave a 5-day ultimatum to the authorities for reopening of the campus and the residential halls of the university.
The students gave the ultimatum at a press conference held at Chaal Chattar area on the campus around 11:30am, reports UNB.
After the press conference, the students brought out a protest rally from Daina Chattar area which ended in front of the administration building after parading main roads of the campus.
They also observed a sit-in programme there to press home their demands.
Students will face session jams as the university has been kept closed for a long time due to the pandemic, the agitating students said.
The students demanded the university authorities to continue its bachelors’ and Master’s final examinations.
Besides, Dhaka University Vice-Chancellor Professor Dr Md Akhtaruzzaman has dismissed plans to reopen residential halls by March 13 and said that dormitories will be reopened as per the government’s decisions.
“Classes will resume only after vaccinating the students, teachers and employees by April 17,” the VC said Tuesday.
The government has decided to reopen residential halls on May 17 and classes will be held in classrooms from May 24.
Meanwhile, agitated students of Jahangirnagar University (JU) called off their demonstration till Wednesday.
Students announced this decision on Tuesday noon at the university’s transport terminal.
However they said, they won’t leave the dormitories out until the situation turns normalcy.
JU students have been staying at the university’s dormitories breaching the rules of the universities.
The university’s proctorial team and the hall administration asked them twice on Monday to leave halls. But the students did not budge.
Noshin Adibam, a student of Drama and Dramatics department of 45th batch, told newsmen that the university administration had filed a lawsuit regarding the brutal attack on the students by nearby villagers.
They (university) sought time from us to process the case that is why the demonstration has been called off, she added.
Noshin Adibam said they will not leave the halls now out of security concern.
Earlier, on Monday, Education Minister Dipu Moni said classes in all the public and private universities will resume on May 24.
The residential halls of the universities will be reopened on May 17, said the Minister while addressing a virtual press briefing.
However, the online classes will continue but no examination will be held before the reopening of the universities, the minister added.
The government shut all the schools and educational institutions on March 17 last year after the country confirmed its first Covid-19 cases on March 8.
