Unhygienic food with high price: Students facing problems at CU

Dining halls, canteens and restaurants in the Chittagong University (CU) campus are serving unhygienic and low-quality food to students at high prices, causing the students inflicted with several diseases.
This has become a source of constant worry for students as the scenario is worsening consequently in absence of the authority’s concern and as they are being caught ill after consuming the foods.
University sources said, the owners of the restaurant and small food corners at the shanties adjacent to the academic buildings and residential halls, are running their business without fearing of being brought to book if unhygienic food supply is found.
Side by side, the CU medical center sources said, the students and employees, those come here to take treatment every day, are mostly found suffering of gastric and acidity problem. Some of those are found inflicted with diarrhoea, amashoy and fever.
CU medical center on duty doctor said, those who come here mostly suffering from acidity problem, adding that the students got inflicted with such a diseases because of the unhygienic and burnt-oil made foods.
Visiting the university it is found, there are more than 50 food courts, three fast-food corner, some 20 restaurants, servicing low-quality foods to the students. Side by side, the students bound to take the snacks at high prices as the sellers frequently hiking the prices of the food products.
The reporter found that a Singara is sold at tk 5, a Samosa at tk 5 a potato made roll at tk 10, a Piazo at tk 2, an egg-chop at tk 15, a cutlet at tk 10 among others. But comparing to the outer campus a singara is sold tk 4, samosa at tk 4, a puri at tk 4 with minimum quality food, while the campus food sellers selling it at high price.
Some students allege that the university authorities have not taken any measures to control the prices of food sold on the campus. Side by side, any concerned authority was not found to check the food crisis here while the city and outer campus restaurants are being raided by mobile court and executive magistrates off and on to ensure safe food.
Nazmul Islam, a masters student of Bangla Department said, the shop and owner association here isn’t paying heed to the health matter of the students and so they are providing us the poisonous foods but we have to take it as no option is included to us but consuming these.
However, the owners of the restaurants alleged that they could provide high quality food at the same cost but they can’t as many influential quarter including some activists of the ruling party didn’t pay bill after consuming food.
Meanwhile, the dining managers said, the university only provides salary for the staffs and pays for gas and electricity bills. Without any subsidy, we were supposed to arrange food for students at just Tk. 20 per meal. We had no option but to increase the prices.
Sultan Ahmed, convener of the university’s provost committee, said, “We’ve asked the owners of all dining halls and canteens not to increase the price unreasonably and maintain quality food for the safety of the students.
Students alleged that the restaurants owners are running their business in unhygienic condition in absence of the control and in absence of the students’ representative.
