bdnews24.com :Twenty-five people have been injured in a clash between police and students of the Institute of Health and Technology (IHT) in Barisal.Police charged baton and arrested 14 students after they blocked the road near the Barisal Medical College and Hospital to press for various demands on Wednesday.The injured have been admitted to the Barisal Sher-e-Bangla Medical College. Sonia Akhter, one of the 23 students injured in police action, said they were holding peaceful protests at the Banda Road area.The students’ ten demands include the formation of a Bangladesh Diploma Medical Education Board to replace the Paramedical Education Board, the creation of new posts in line with the WHO guidelines, eradication of legal complexities in job appointments, second grade status for diploma medical technologists and pharmacists and starting of BSc and MSc courses.Male police personnel had beating up female students, said an enraged student, Tanni Afroz.”This is abuse on women,” she said, seeking punishment for the personnel concerned.Demands are not met by street blockades, said Deputy Police Commissioner Syed Golam Rauf, “One must go to the appropriate authorities.””They have blocked streets before. We were able to convince them to leave then. But police failed to persuade them on Wednesday. Police were forced to take action because of the students’ belligerence and in order to clear the road for traffic.” The students have injured two policemen by throwing stones at them.
