RU teacher assaulted by RMCH interns: Students block highway; Demand punishment

Several hundred students of law department of Rajshahi University on Thursday laid siege to Dhaka-Rajshahi highway for two and half hours protesting against physical assault allegedly carried out on one of their teachers by the interns of Rajshahi Medical College and Hospital on Wednesday night.
The demonstrators brought out a procession on the campus around 10:30am in protest at the incident and took position on the highway around 11:00am demanding arrest of the perpetrators.
The students, however, continued their protest till 1:40pm on the highway and later left the place bowing to the pressure of police and activists of Bangladesh Chhatra League, student wing of ruling Awami League.
Later, the students observed sit in programme in front of administrative building where they were forced to withdraw demonstration by police and Chhatra League, RU unit along with the university proctorial body.
Students, then, took decision to file a case against the involved interns of RMCH. Filing the case was under process till filing this report.
Campus sources said law department Professor Enamul Zahir went to the hospital to take treatment on Wednesday night when he met a collision with a woman intern.
The intern, only named as Merry Prianka, alleged that the teacher hurled abuse at her while the professor denied such allegation.
He was beat up by other interns and later rescued by Rajpara police Officer-In-Charge (Investigation) Golam Mostofa.
