Students of Rabindra University in Sirajganj’s Shahjadpur demonstrated on Tuesday, protesting the forced haircut of their mate who attempted suicide from the humiliation.
The students boycotted Tuesday’s exams and started protesting in front of the administrative building of the university, demanding removal of Farhana Yasmin Baten, head of the Department of History, Culture and Bangladesh Studies, reports our correspondent.
On Monday night, a first-year student of the department tried to commit suicide-taking sleeping pills-at a mess in Shahjadpur area after his hair was forcibly chopped off along with 13 to 14 other students as per the instruction of Farhana Yasmin.
Before the examination started on September 25, the head of the department instructed the students to trim their hair before entering exam hall.
After the student took sleeping pills, he was admitted to Khwaja Yunus Ali Medical College Hospital in Sirajganj in critical condition. His condition remains unchanged. On Monday, the teacher entered the examination hall and scolded the students, as they wanted a fresh routine for the rest of the exams.
Unable to bear the humiliation, one of the students, upon returning to mess, tried to commit suicide..
Tamanna, a student of the same department, told the media that all the students of the university felt insulted. “That’s why, we started protesting. We demand removal of the head of the department,” she said.
Professor Abdul Latif, treasurer of Shahjadpur Rabindra University and acting vice chancellor, told the media that the authorities would take action if students lodged a written complaint against the forced haircut.
