Information Minister Hasanul Haque Inu underlined the need for a strong mass media for a sustainable democracy in the country.
He described the media as mirror of the democracy and said the main responsibility of the government leaders is always to keep the mirror transparent.
Media must remain alert so that society and democracy are not hurt, he said and added that even strong democracy is needed for the weak section of people of a country.
The minister said this on Sunday while unveiling the logo of a newspaper ‘Ajker Potrica’ at a hotel in the city.
Editor and publisher Shafiqul Islam delivered the welcome speech.
Railway Minister Mujibul Haque, veteran journalist Sadek Khan, educationist Dr Tareq Shamsur Rahman, Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) leader Enam Ahmed Chowdhury, former chief engineer of LGED Shahidul Hassan, Editor of Amader orthonity Naimul Islam Khan and other media personalities were present. Expressing the hope that there will be no false publication of reports in the newspaper, Inu said the newspaper would show the sign of objectivity in publishing reports.
Mass media should remain besides democracy, constitution and history of the country, said the minister. Besides, he said, it (media) should not favour autocracy.
Falsehood in media does not mean criticism, he said adding that media should not take resort publication of bizarre and false information.
