Strategy and World Cup Football

A.T.M.Nurun Nabi :
Argentina are favourites to win the World Cup Football title 2022 in view of the players’ determination and line of attack displayed in the match against Europe Champions Italy last month in London.
They won the world title last time in 1986 because of super Maradona’s extra ordinary performance. His departure has made Argentina orphan, which can be overcome this year if Messy appears in the ground as another Maradona, whose game planning as captain was wonderful.
In 1990, in the match against Brazil, none believed that that Argentina would triumph. But Maradona made it possible through left winger Caniggia. Just one chance was enough to bring Brazil down to the earth. Yet Argentiona could not become champion because referee contributed to Germany’s third world title.
(West) Germany became a lucky team in 1954 when the referee disallowed Puskas’s legal goal which deprived Hungary to level the score 3-3. Interestingly Hungary torpedoed Germany 8-3 at the group stage of the seventh edition of the World Cup Football.
(West) Germany in return paid price in 1966 when the referee of the final match allowed England, the eventual champions, a goal although the ball did not cross the goal line. Germany’s protest was not responded to. Argentina were also treated imperfectly in their quarterfinal match against hosts England. Being disgusted, an Argentine player threw spite on the ground.
In 2010 World Cup, Kaka’s legal goal was disallowed depriving Brazil from taking 3-0 lead against Holland, the eventual winners. Brazil continued to disappoint the country’s soccer mad population because of the coaches’ poor players’ selection and strategy in the subsequent three World Cup. In 1982, Brazil took 2-0 lead against Italy in the quarterfinals in Spain. But what a poor strategy was that they played extreme offensive football, which helped Italy to win the cup beating (West) Germany in the final.
Surprisingly to the soccer experts, Brazul’s 1982 team are the world’s ever-best team though there was no Garincha.
The 2022 World Cup will be held in Qatar to be participated by 32 countries and regions. The six Asian representatives are Iran, Japan, Qatar, Saudi Arab, South Korea and Australia. None of them, however, has power and skills to surprise the world of football.
The defending champions are France who are one of the seeded teams this time also.
