The first floating bridge Jhampa Baor in Manirampur Upazila of Jashore district has been broken by the nor’wester on Saturday night.
When the storm started suddenly the bridge was overturned. However, no casualties were reported.
The communication between Rajgonj Bazar village with Jampa village disconnected due to collapsing the bridge. As a result thousands of people were suffering badly.
Witnesses said, in the night, the people gathered in the Rajganj floating bridge from different areas. Suddenly the storm started and broke up the middle of the iron angle and left some parts in the bridge. And the parts of the two sides went under water. But the people on the bridge were able to move quickly to a safe place.
Liton Hossain, a member of Jhampa Village Development Foundation and Floating Bridge Building Committee, said, “after the storm, 15-20 members were working and welding in different parts of the bridge.
In spite of the long-standing demand of Jhampa villagers, last year, 70-75 youths of the village took the initiative to construct floating bridge on their own cost. They also formed an organisation named Jampa Development Foundation. Then they collected the money and constructed one thousand feet tall floating bridge with eight hundred iron grains angle and 839 plastic drums.
Mokarram Hossain, OC , Monirampur Police station said that 15/20 members of Jhampa Village Development Foundation and Floating Bridge Building Committee were working to repair the bridge , it may be complete soon.
