Bangladesh Tanners Association (BTA) has demanded the withdrawal of raw leather export to protect the domestic industry.
They said it at a press conference on Wednesday held at Dhanmondi, Dhaka.
BTA Chairman Shaheen Ahmed said, “From August 20, we will be collecting raw hides at the price determined by the leather traders.”
“The government’s decision to export raw hides must be withdrawn immediately. Otherwise, the domestic leather industry will be in grave danger,” he said.
On the same day, Commerce Minister Tipu Munshi said that raw hides would be exported, given the low price of leather in the domestic market.
It is being noticed that the hides of the sacrificial animals are not being sold at the prices fixed by the ministry, said the handout.
Businessmen involved with tannery industry have been urged to discharge their responsibilities in this connection.
Besides, the businessmen as well as the local administration have also been requested to maintain quality of the raw hide for its preservation after processing.
In this regard, the Divisional Commissioners, Deputy Commissioners and Upazila Nirbahi Officers have been asked by the Commerce Ministry to cooperate in this regard.
