Police recovered the body of a newborn, Sohana Akhter, who was stolen from her sleeping parents 53 hours ago in Morrelganj upazila of Bagerhat district.
Locals found the body floating in a pond next to the newborn’s house and informed police, who then recovered the body on Wednesday morning.
Morrelganj police station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Monirul Islam said: “The pond was searched earlier. We are investigating to find out whether the body was bought and dumped later or earlier.”
On Monday, Sohana’s grandfather Ali Hossain Khan filed a kidnapping case with Morrelganj police station. Earlier that day, Sohana, the daughter of Sujan Khan and Shanta Akhter, was abducted from her sleeping parents in Gabtala village of Morrelganj upazila.
Police have been searching for the newborn since the incident.
Sujan Khan and Shanta Akhter said after having dinner on Sunday, they turned off the lights and fell asleep. Sohana was there with them then. At 2am, they woke up and found their daughter missing.
