Green activists at a discussion on Friday urged the government to take effective steps to improve the people’s living environment in the city. Dhaka has already been identified as the second in the list of world’s most unlivable cities.
The environment in the city has been worsening day by day. Mass people’s interest is ignored while undertaking development projects. In addition, the city’s ecosystem is also sidelined, observed the green activists.
Poribesh Bachao Andolon (POBA), an environmental voluntary organisation, and Dhaka University Poribesh Sangsad jointly arranged the discussion in the Shamsul Haque Auditorium of Dhaka University, marking the World Environment Day 2015.
POBA Chairman Abu Naser Khan, Vice-Chancellor of Ahsanullah Science and Technology University Professor Dr MM Shafiullah, POBA Joint-General Secretary Dr Lenin, its Coordinator Atique Morshed and founder President of Dhaka University Poribesh Sangsad Shahid Reza Russell, among others, delivered lectures.
POBA Chairman Abu Naser Khan said, if the government wants to bring back healthy environment in the city, it will have to give priority to city ecosystem and the city dwellers’ interest while devising development plans and projects.
“The environment of the whole country is deteriorating gradually, but such situation could no longer continue. Time has come to resist the environmental collapse,” he said.
