Steps to check river erosion stressed

The Parliamentary Standing Committee on Water Resources Ministry recommended taking effective steps to prevent erosion in the areas prone to river bank erosion.
The parliamentary body made the recommendation on Thursday at its 5th meeting at the Jatiya Sangsad (JS) Bhaban, with committee Chairman Ramesh Chandra Sen presiding, said an official release.
Committee members Anisul Islam Mahmud, Mohammad Nazrul Islam, AKM Fazlul Haq, M Farudul Haq Khan, Mohammad Ekramul Karim Chowdhury, Mostafizur Rahman Chowdhury, Anupam Shahjahan Joy and Selina Jahan Lita attended the meeting. The meeting discussed in detail the Water Management Improvement Project (WAMIP).
It also discussed the activities undertaken by the water resources ministry during the current flood situation and the project for protection of Chowhali upazila in Sirajganj from the erosion of the Jamuna.
The meeting was told that the government has undertaken WAMIP to implement sustainable water management activities ensuring participation of the local people.
This project is under implementation in 39 districts at an estimated cost of Taka 982 crore. Eighty percent work of the project has already been completed. The project will end by 2015.
The committee suggested completing the ongoing projects quickly and involving elected public representatives in new projects.
Water resources secretary and senior officials concerned were present at the meeting.
