Steps taken to protect Royal Bengal Tiger : Minister

BSS, Dhaka :Environment and Forests Minister Anwar Hossain informed the House that the government has already taken various measurers to protect Royal Bengal Tigers and other wildlife species in the Sundarbans. Responding to a question of treasury bench member Mohammad Mizanur Rahman on Thursday, he told the House that the government enacted the “Wildlife (Protection and Security) Act, 2012 to protect tigers and other wildlife species in the Sundarbans.The law has a provision of the highest 12 years in jail and Taka 15 lakh as fine for killing and smuggling tigers. He also said that under the “Wildlife (Protection) Act, 1974, three wildlife sanctuaries in 6,017 kilometres of land had been announced for protection and preservation of tigers and other wildlife species in the Sundarbans.Apart from this, the minister said, the present government has undertaken initiatives to provide Taka 100,000 to the family of a person killed by tiger and Taka 50,000 to the injured one to ease conflict between men and tigers.Under the programmes, he added, the government has so far provided Taka 46 lakh to 51 victim families of tigers’ attack. He said Bangladesh tiger action plan (2009-17) has been adopted for tiger preservation and under the programme the employees and officers of the Sundarbans are being imparted training for their capacity building to this end.
