A human chain and rally in Sunamganj district town on Sunday demanded steps against the alleged corruption at Sunamagnj District Hospital through enquiry.
The participants of the human chain demanded for ensuring healthcare services at the newly-built hospital building.
Besides, another agitation was staged at the town on Saturday to press the same demands.
The TIB’s Conscious Citizens’ Committee, Sunamganj district chapter at a separate programme demanded steps against the irregularities at the government hospital weeks ago.
The speakers at the rally said 2.6 million inhabitants of the district are dependent on the hospital, which was upgraded into a 250-bed facility from 100-bed one 10 years ago, but things did change much due to absence of required number of physicians and other staff.
The authority even failed to start the newly-built building for more than a year. It remained unused till date, they said.
Only 14 physicians are at work in place of 62 posts while there is no physician for the emergency department. Besides, a “syndicate” has reportedly been engaged in corruption in the supply of medicines, food and other materials to the hospital, the speakers alleged.
Veteran freedom fighter Abu Sufian, senior teacher Robiul Islam, farmers leader Abdul Quaiyum and social activist Mujahidul Isam also spoke, among others.
District Civil Surgeon Ashutosh Das admitted the crisis of physicians and other staff at the health centre. “We are trying our best to serve the patients with limited manpower and resources”, he added.
Besides, the newly-built building of the hospital could not be put into service due to the staff shortage, he said.
Meanwhile, a total of 10 dengue patients were admitted to different hospitals in the Sylhet division during the last 24 hours. With this, the situation showed further improvement in the region for the last few days.
Of the 10 admitted in 24 hours till Sunday morning, seven were admitted to the Sylhet MAG Osmani Medical College and Hospital (SOMCH) while two were admitted to the Moulvibazar district hospital and one in Habiganj district hospital.
