Stand against terrorism, militancy: PM

Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina on Wednesday urged the country’s people to stand against terrorism, militancy and drug addiction.
While speaking at a mammoth rally at Faridpur Govt Rajendra College ground, she also urged all, including guardians, teachers, imams, professions, law enforcement agencies and administration, to remain alert so that no one gets involved in these social menaces.
“All will have to resist terrorism, militancy and drug abuse. Be sure that not a single child resorts to terrorism, militancy and drug addiction. The path of terrorism and militancy isn’t ours,” she said.
Mentioning that study is the first and only duty of students, the Prime Minister said, “They have to shun the path of militancy, drug addiction and terrorism.”
She also asked the teachers and guardians to make sure that no student remains absent in any educational institution and take account of whom they befriend.
Hasina said the government has taken various programmes to ensure higher education of students. “We’re doing this so that the children get modern education.” Describing Islam as a religion of peace, she said, “Islam never permits the killing of innocent people and suicide attempt.”
The Prime Minister said those who have taken the wrong path of militancy and terrorism are maligning Islam.
Giving a brief description of development activities in Faridpur and other parts of the country, she sought people’s support in the next general election to be held in 2019. “The election will be held in 2019. In that election, we want your votes in favour of ‘Boat’ for continuation of the development activities,” she said.
Hasina said the aim of her party is to ensure development of the country and its people. “AL means development… AL is the friend of poor people,” she said.
She mentioned that the government is providing various types of allowances to the poor, elderly people and distressed women under social safety net programmes. “As a result, over 5 crore people have graduated to the middle-income group from
low-income group.” The Prime Minister said stipend money is being sent to mobile phone accounts of 1.30 crore mothers as the government wants to see smile on their faces. Hasina said in order to reach healthcare facilities to the doorsteps of the rural people, her government established Community Clinics and Union Health Centers.
Besides, 30 types of medicines are being given to the poor people from this community clinics and government hospitals. The Prime Minister expressed her firm resolve again to turn Bangladesh into a middle-income digital nation by 2021 and prosperous and developed one in South Asia by 2041.
AL presidium member and deputy leader of the House Syeda Sajeda Chowdhury, AL advisory council member Tofail Ahmed, general secretary and Road Transport and Bridges Obaidul Quader, Local MP and LGRD Minister Engineer Khandaker Mosharraf Hossain, AL presidium members Kazi Zafar Ullah and Faruk Khan, joint general secretary Dr Dipu Moni and Shipping Minister Shajahan Khan also spoke at the programme with district AL president Subol Chandra Saha in the chair.
