A schoolgirl has ‘committed suicide’ by taking sleeping pills allegedly after being sexually harassed by a youth in Bhandaria upazila headquarters.
The deceased was identified as Ruksana Rupa, 16, a 10th grader of Bhandaria Girls’ High School and daughter of Ruhul Amin of the upazila headquarters.
Quoting Ruksana’s father, SM Maksudur Rahman, officer-in-charge of Bhandaria Police Station, said local youth named Tamim doctored a photo imposing the face of the victim on that of a nude one. He showed the picture to the girl on his mobile phone on Friday while she was returning home from tuition.
Ruksana informed her parents of it and later took some sleeping pills around 11pm on Friday night.
She was first taken to Upazila Health Complex and then shifted to Barishal Sher-e-Bangla Medical College Hospital (SBMC) where she died around 1:30 am on Saturday, the OC added.
Meanwhile, police arrested Tamim, 20, son of Monju Khan of the locality over the incident.
