New meter ignored: SSC examinees suffer most due to shortage of autorickshaws

Roads Transport and Bridges Minister Obaidul Quader yesterday said CNG-run auto rickshaws will come into effect under metering system in the port city from Sunday.
All CNG run auto rickshaws will run in the port city under the new meter rules and fare chart and action will be taken against those who fail to comply the order, the Minister added.
The minister said this as the chief guest while addressing ‘Youth Conference’, this evening held at Hotel Radisson Blu in Chittagong, organised by Chittagong Chamber of Commerce and Industries (CCCI).
He said the government was determined to stop plying of three-wheelers on highways aiming to lessen road accidents and loss of lives and properties.He claimed that the number of accidents on highways has been dropped in the last couple of months due to the ban.
Quader said that the construction works on the proposed two kilometer long tunnel under the Karnaphuli River will begin very soon. He said, another new commercial hub will be built on the south side of Karnaphuli River and it will also put a stop to hill cutting, which will herald a new horizon of expansion of trade and commerce as well as of housing in the port city.
He stressed on road connectivity and infrastructure development of roads and railway sectors of Chittagong, Cox’s Bazar and Chittagong Hill Tracts for tapping the vast economic and tourism prospect of the region.
Another report adds : The first day of the SSC and its equivalent examinations was held peacefully in 169 centres under Chitagong Education Board .
The examination began at 10 am which ended at 1 pm, a board sources said. Divisional Commissioner of Chittagong Md. Ruhul Amin and theDeputy commissioner Md. Mesbahuddin visited different centres in the city during examination period.
CEB sources said about 1,12,959 students appeared in the examinations of which 52,066 male and 60,893 female students . Groupwise students are 24,571 in science group, 30,688 in humanities group and 57,700 incommerce group. Sources further said the total number of examinees in Chittagong is 80,567 including 28,3126 from city areas. The numbers of e xaminees from Coxsbazar 13,961, Rangamati district 7,603, Khagrachari district 8,029 , and Bandarban district 2,709 students, sources said. While talking with a number of guardians of the examines told this reporter that they had to suffer for transporting their kids to the destinations of exam centres lack of as usal auto-rickshaws due to prohibition on plying auto rickshaws without meters the concerned authority. These guardians also opined that this prohibition on auto-rickshaws should not be imposed during this SSC examinations at least.
