Sri Lanka beat defending champions Malaysia by 2-1 goals in their last Group-A match of the fourth Bangabandhu Gold Cup International Football Tournament at Bangabandhu National Stadium here on Friday.
Sri Lanka dominated the first half by 2-0 goals.
AND Bandara put Sri Lanka ahead in the 19th minute in a quick counter attack. Midfielder Azar Mohammed Shaheel cut a through pass to Sundarj Niresh at the left edge of the box, Niresh cut the ball back to AND Bandara who flicked it to fire the net, 1-0.
Chalana Chameera doubled the lead in the 63rd minute by a left footer flicking shot from the top of the six-yard box off a right footer cross of EAC Sanjeewa from the right-edged of the box, 2-0.
Malaysia reduced the margin in the 81st minute by a midfielder Nor Fazly Alias header from the top of the six-yard box utilising a right footer pass from the top of the box off substitute midfielder Muhammad Hadin Azman, 2-1.
Malaysia had chance to score in the 76th minute, but CJ Devasagayam free kick from the top of the box was fisted by Lankan goalie for a corner.
Malaysia missed an opportunity in the in the 36th minute as their substitute forward Bobby Gonzalez saw his side-volley going out rocking the crosspiece off a cross of CJ Devasagayam.
In the stopgap time of the first half Bobby Gonzalez again let his team down failing to place the ball past Sri Lankan goalie Ruwan Anurasiri in a one to one situation.
After the day’s match, both sides -Sri Lanka and Malaysia – finished the eight-team tournament campaign form the group stage.
Sri Lanka finished third collecting three points from three matches with one win and two losses while Malaysia finished bottom with two points from as many matches playing two draws and one loss.
